Dr. Yang Wai Yew, PhD.

Dr Yang Wai Yew serves as a Senior Lecturer and a practicing dietitian in the Department of Dietetics, Universiti Putra Malaysia. She received her BSc (Hons) in Dietetics from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, a master’s degree in human nutrition from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, and completed her doctoral studies at the University of Newcastle, Australia. With over two decades of experience, her work bridges science and empathy, focusing on childhood nutrition, family dynamics, and culturally tailored interventions. As Lead Dietitian in a paediatric multidisciplinary team for several years, she cared for children with nutrition-related issues and special needs where she developed a strong interest in family nutrition and childhood obesity. She actively published her research as the lead author, co-authored two book chapters, and received two publication awards in maternal and child nutrition. In 2022, she secured a national FRGS grant to study dietary and genomic factors related to childhood obesity and established an international collaboration looking at picky eating. Beyond research and dietetics practice, Dr Yang has been a passionate academic educator since 2010, believing in transforming dietetics students' learning through holistic approaches. Her significant achievements included leading the first dietetics program’s accreditation in a private university, establishing the first student-led dietetics clinic in Malaysia to provide dietetics services to the community and winning two teaching excellence awards.
